Why Small Business needs SEO Expertise

I recently briefly examined 25 randomly sampled websites for small local businesses – yes a small sample but the results were revealing. The impetus for this exercise was part of a project to identify potential leads. What I found surprised me. While many of the sites were professionally developed and nicely designed, I judged only one site as truly optimized from a technical point of view. The other sites displayed a range of problems that would affect their search engine rankings.

Surprisingly, only 10 out of the 25 sites appeared to have implemented any analytics tool and of those, two had implemented the code incorrectly. Analytics tool such as Google Analytics are essential in any SEO initiative. Analytics tools give the you insight into how many visitors are coming to your site, where they are coming from and what they are doing. They track changes in traffic over time and can aid in pinpointing areas for improvement on your site.

Other observable issues were pages with little or poor content, too long or too short titles, repeated titles and descriptions, urls that are not seo-friendly and poor use of html markup elements.

These types of issues can be easily uncovered by looking at the page’s source. Remedying these basic issues would be the first step of any SEO initiative.
